MDHHS Mishandles More Than The Flint Water Crisis

June 15, 2017

Health officials that don’t care about the health of Michigan families charged with multiple crimes.

Troy, MI ~The head of Michigan's health department, Director Nick Lyons, along with the State's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Eden Wells were charged with several crimes stemming from the Flint water crisis. As of today’s date Flint still does not have safe drinking water. The Michigan Department Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has not only failed in protecting the health and wellbeing of the people of Michigan, but knowingly contributed to obstructing investigations to fix the problems that have affected the city of Flint for almost four years. These are the same people who lied on the regulatory impact statement, which allowed the MDHHS to push an administrative rule that requires parents to meet with the health department for a vaccine waiver [325.176(12)], that usurped the existing statutory procedure for parents claiming vaccine exemptions, all without the public having due process through the legislative body.

On May 25, 2017 Dr. Wells testified in the House Education Reform committee. Her testimony was against House Bills 4425 & 4426 introduced by Rep. Tom Barrett (R) to rescind the series of administrative rules promulgated by the MDHHS to require a parent to attend multiple sessions questioning their religious and personal beliefs. They also allow children’s private medical information to be made public by singling out and exposing children based on vaccination status in the school setting and discriminate against children’s right to a public education based on medical profiling. She said, “The administrative rules directly align with public health code and support the MDHHS’s immunization goals.” This is a blatant lie. The public health code is very clear on exemptions from vaccination, and the current state law says nothing about a bureaucratic office inserting itself into this process merely to meet its financial and strategic goals.

At a time when public trust of state government is at an all-time low, Michigan for Vaccine Choice questions the ability of the MDHHS to be transparent in abiding by the law. Michigan currently ranks dead last in transparency. This is amplified by the mishandling of the Flint water crisis, the MDHHS rule annihilates the legislative process, and the constitutional rights of parents to make medical and educational decisions for their families without the interference of an overburdened administration like the MDHHS. All elected officials including the Governor need to stand with Tom Barrett on House Bills 4425 & 4426, against illegal activities by state agencies that believe they are above the law and your constitutional rights.
