Below is an MDHHS chart that shows vaccination waiver rates were stable for years until 2010, and the reason for the spike is a key piece of information MDHHS has omitted from their claims.
In 2010, MDHHS added 3 new vaccines to the mandated schedule for school: a second dose of varicella vaccine, a fifth dose of pertussis-containing vaccine and the meningococcal vaccine. Because of these additions, Michigan has some of the most stringent vaccine requirements in the country.
Waiver rates plummeted more than 50% between 2010 and 2014, before MDHHS implemented the rule change. Comparing the 2013 school year to 2014 alone, there were 6500 less waivers and up to a 40% reduction in waiver rates.
